Direct consequences of tariff increases:

Possible benefits of increasing tariffs:

1. Protect domestic manufacturing and workers’ income
2. Reduce the federal government deficit and enrich the treasury
3. More companies build factories in the United States to increase employment opportunities for the grassroots people.

Possible disadvantages of increasing tariffs:

1. Products exported by the country are subject to retaliatory tariffs by foreign countries, resulting in economic losses
2. The country’s manufacturing industry is protected by tariff barriers and may gradually become dependent on it and lose its international competitiveness
3. The tariffs collected are used to subsidize agriculture and some specific industries, which may breed more corruption

Analysis of the reasons for increasing tariffs:

1. Reduce the federal government’s fiscal deficit
2. Consolidate the Republican Party’s votes in industrial states and the working class
3. Use tariff revenue to subsidize farmers and agricultural states and consolidate the Republican Party’s votes in the agricultural population
